Nathan is our (just turned 16 years old in December) grandson and the only one of our 4 grandchildren interested in playing bluegrass.

About 3 years ago he had an old Johnson banjo that he picked around on. Steve Baldridge was here and played that old Johnson for Nathan and really made it sound good. Nathan was impressed and inspired. He learned to play the banjo with instruction from Mark Poe, also a great banjo player. Nathan can't read music and plays by ear as do most bluegrass musicians.

This picture was taken just as he came home with his Gibson. As you can see in the picture, he caught his dad with "farm dirt" on his clothes but we took the picture anyway.

Nathan plays at our barn with a band called Flatland Bluegrass consisting of Donna Hilderbrand, Cooley Calihan, Alan McQueen and Gene Wagers.  Dolly, Adam, Woody and Sue help out also.

Nate was asked to join the set of Joe Issacs on November 13th. Too bad that I didn't have my camera. What a special set for Nate.

Nathan got a chance to play with Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers at the Wilmington, Ohio festival on November 14th.

Jamming is hard work and requires an occasional nap

Mark Poe and the All American Bluegrass Band were kind enough to let  Nate pick a couple of songs with them when he was first starting.

Earl Scruggs (sitting in the middle) was kind enough to sign Nathan's banjo.

Nathan met Kyle and Brandon Clerkin at Bill Monroe Bean Blossom Festival. Brandon and Kyle live near Madison, Indiana. During the festival, the boys frequently were found jamming at the Livers' campsite at Bean Blossom.

Kyle Clerkin and Nathan (the two boys in the middle) are shown playing on the stage at the Bean Blossom Festival this past June. They were part of the Youth Music Boot Camp headed up by Sarah and Ricky Wasson.

James White and Deer Creek let Nathan pick a few with the band. Jared Griffin (mandolin), James Whie (guitar), Greg Griffin (guitar) and Nate (banjo).

Our campsite at Bean Blossom. You can barely see Alec  just behind Nathan. Alec's grandmother, Linda is in the navy shirt. Don't know the name of the guy in the yellow shirt but it looks like his socks are clean.

Wanda and Clarence Baker came to Bean Blossom to visit and jam. Maybe it was raining or maybe they just wanted to practice a little before they went outside. Don't remember.
